Custer State Park GP

Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park combine to make a fantastic place to view wildlife.  All roads are paved or well graded.

Most people simply take the Wildlife Loop, and they do it in the middle of the day.  This will usually let you see buffalo, a few antelope and a gazillion prairie dogs.

Best wildlife viewing is the couple hours before sunset.  I have been told that sunrise is also good, but I never got out of bed to try it.

The best place to see elk is CSP Road 6, which also is in Wind Cave National Park.  Be sure to bring binoculars for scouting and a camera with a telephoto lens for photos.  

The State Park charges an entry fee, but the National Park does not.

Mount Coolidge Lookout gets you right up there for good views of the surrounding area.
