Over Under Ruins GP
One ruin on top of another, plus 2 other minor ones.
There is a very obvious reason these are named Over and Under Ruins. Take a look and you will agree.
The main road getting to the area is an easy graded road suitable for any vehicle. There is a quarter mile long spur that will get you very close to the ruins, but that is rated 2.0. This can be walked if you do not want to drive it. The first ruin is the Over and Under one, and there are two more very minor ruins downstream from that one. The GPX file includes a hike along a somewhat defined path down to all three locations. Put this on your GPS device or smart phone and have a go at it. There is a GPS - gpx track file at the bottom of the page. |
This webpage is all about ruins, but the road in and out is not too shabby. Great views of the Blue Mountains on the east part of the road and an overlook of Hammond Canyon off the west part.
The lower ruin is accessible without any climbing. It has one complete room with an intact roof, plus there are several partial walls.
The first ruin has one room that was probably two stories. A section of the floor remains. The floor was constructed with a layer of mud on top of sticks.
This window had a wooden header.
My guess is that this paint is graffiti. Most rock art in the area is pecked into rock, not painted.

The dwellings in this canyon were closer to the ground than what is typical in the area. The upper ruin is somewhat of an exception - we did not attempt to enter it.
Two lesser ruins downstream.
